5 Lessons learned from Netflix's How To Live Mortgage Free

The story of How to live mortgage free takes place in Great Britain. The tenants of this place face a big problem: the payment of mortgages and the exorbitant costs in renting their houses or apartments.

Does it ring a bell? This is something that doesn't only affect people who live in Europe.
In the US, things are similar; A large part of the employee's salary goes to rent, and the the most most common mortgage term is 30 years

The cool thing is that this series left us 5 lessons that you can consider as a little light at the end of the tunnel.

How to live mortgage free?

Several people who are interviewed in the series say that they bought vacant land, gas stations, churches and even a boat to build their new house with the premise of living mortgage-free (to start the process, all you have to do is pay a building permit and that's it).

5 lessons we learned from this series on Netflix

1- Dedicate all your time (not your money)

If you want to save money, you'll have to do the work yourself.
If you're in the process of getting your house: repair, design, clean and paint yourself.

One of the challenges to be met in the series was to make a ship become a home, and it was done.

The girl who bought it said, “I don't like plans, you have to improvise, and it takes a lot of imagination to build the house you want.”

This girl put a lot of effort into it and conditioned the boat. Today she lives on one of the lakes in Great Britain and says that she feels free because she no longer pays rent or mortgage.

2- If you want to find a “bargain”, you'll have to think differently

By living in an unconventional house or establishment you'll be paying little money, on the other hand, in a normal house you would be paying 916 pounds (equivalent to 1,190 dollars per month).

There's a chapter in which a retired man says that he thinks it's a very good idea to live in a church (he only spent on a central heating for the place) and set out to find second-hand furniture.

Not one for bragging, but his house is vintage and has a cool vibe.

There's another girl who lives in a small place and takes advantage of all the spaces to accommodate her furniture and avoids piling up objects, for example: she has a kitchen table hidden under the floor, a closet under the mattress and her refrigerator is underground.
She spends her time improvising spaces.

3- An ecological house is much economical

The time has come to lend a hand to the planet. Our wallets will thank us.

If you want to have your own house and at the same time save money you need to have a water treatment system, lights that work with the sun, a garden at home, a roof with plants and solar panels to heat your water.

That is what one of the girls who bought a vacant lot and turned it into an ecological and modern millennial residence recommends.

4- Save in a fun way

One of the families that appears in the series tells that for a long time they put together plans without spending; this in order to save all their money and use it all to pay their mortgage.

These were the activities that helped them save a lot of money:

  • Movie marathons at home with popcorn
  • Healthy food (go to the supermarket but always buy generic products)
  • Water gun fight in the garden
  • Turn off the lights when no one is home
  • Eat only what is necessary, do not prepare more
  • Pay off the mortgage as quickly as possible. All the money that arrives must be destined to the debt.

5- Not everything will be easy, but if you put in the work you'll be free.

Just don't give up

The trend of preparing unusual places to live is taking off, there are people in different parts of the world who are already doing it.

Everyone thinks that paying a mortgage or buying a house is the same as losing all your money, but we have to look at other options. If you can't afford it, look for places that don't count as a house (in the eyes of the government). Thus, there will be no need to pay a mortgage loan and get into debt for hundreds of years.

The trend of conditioning unusual places to live is proving

Be observant, be creative and improvise. At the end of the day, this new modality is legal.

Tell us what you think, would you join this mortgage-free trend?
